I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work the more I have of it.
-Thomas Jefferson
With St. Patrick’s Day right around the corner on Wednesday, it may bring to mind images of leprechauns, four-leaf clovers, pots of gold at the end of the rainbow and other lucky charms like horseshoes, lucky dice, wishbones, a rabbit’s foot, ladybugs or the number 7.
While you are not able to control everything that happens to you, you can implement the strategies below to take luck into your own hands:
Be prepared and open to opportunities. “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” -Seneca. To be in the right place at the right time, you first have to show up and be willing to step out of your comfort zone. Know your goals and work hard towards your success, by acquiring the skills and experiences you will need to succeed in whatever you are striving for. Then, when luck strikes, you are ready and can take advantage of your fortune.
“Have courage and be kind.” Don’t be afraid to raise your hand or ask for people to take a chance on you. Be willing to meet new people and try new things. When you are generous towards others, not only are you helping them, but you are helping yourself too. By being invested and loyal to others, you are showing them that you care. This can pave the way for future success, as individuals in your network recommend you for positions or opportunities because they remember that you were kind to them.
Trust your gut and visualize good fortune. Have a clear vision of your ambitions, and be prepared for success in whatever form it takes. If you continuously focus on the negatives and what you don’t have, it prevents you from seeing the possibilities in front of you. By moving forward confidently, you can more easily recognize opportunities when they show up or create your own as you pave your path to seek the pot of gold of success at the end of the rainbow.
As Joseph Campbell says, “You are the hero of your own story.” Take control of your story and create your own luck by being determined, confidently moving forward, and resilient when setbacks occur. For advice on how to get back up when life knocks you down, check out the Resiliency Toolkit.
If you decide to try your luck and go out to celebrate or try to meet new friends on St. Patrick’s Day, here are some safety tips.
