"Spring" Into Nature

Fun tips for outdoor family time.

With spring upon us and summer right around the corner, it is the perfect time to take the family on a relaxing spring nature walk. Whether you live in the countryside, or in the city with access to parks and gardens, you can take advantage of going for a nice stroll and enjoying the fresh air, weather and peaceful sounds of nature.

Below are some simple tips to make outdoor adventures easy and fun with little ones:

  • Invite your child to lead. Letting your kids set the pace and lead on a walk builds their confidence and decision-making skills, while also satisfying their curiosity as they see, touch, smell and discover new things on your outing.

  • Start a nature collection. Bring a bag and let them gather interesting things that have fallen to the ground, like bark, leaves, small stones, flowers or seeds that you can use later in nature crafts. You can even bring along magnifying glasses and a kid-friendly field guide so they can better examine their treasures.

  • Practice mindful listening. Mindful listening is being fully present and aware of yourself and the noises surrounding you. Helping your children pay attention to the sound of the wind rustling in the trees or the chirping of birds can be soothing for both them and you.

  • Bring your camera. Not everything that your little ones find on a walk can be brought home to add to their nature collection. Snapping a picture will allow you to keep something as a keepsake to remember these precious memories with your family.

Take the family on a spring nature walk this weekend to promote family bonding, reduce stress and encourage curiosity and imagination.
